One might assume that swimming lessons are necessary for the summertime when it’s warm and everybody wants to visit the beach or community pool for some splashing and fun. You may be surprised to know, however, that some communities offer swimming lessons in Scarborough.
Check with your local recreation center for information on indoor swimming and lessons, and consider signing yourself or your children up so you can join in on the fun next time you are invited to the ocean or a pool party.
Why are swimming lessons necessary? Some of you may have learned to swim from your parents or another trusted relative or friend. Others might have picked up the skill instinctively – everybody learns at a different pace.
However, even if you know the doggie paddle on your own it is still a good idea to take a certified swimming course. Here are a few reasons to consider:
1) Safety – Naturally, it is important to know what to do in the event you are thrown into a pool or fall accidentally into water. Swimming lessons do more than teach the fundamental strokes and kicks, they can help a person think quickly in an emergency. If you are in the water, you will know how to breathe as you swim, and how to deal with swimming in a heavy current.
2) Socializing – Knowing how to swim at an early age can help conquer the fear of water. Lessons build confidence and, as you or your child improve, you will have no problem going to the beach or a pool party when invited. Taking lessons with a group, too, allows you the opportunity to meet other people.
3) Health – Swimming is good exercise. It builds up arm and leg muscles and helps with good respiratory habits. Even if you don’t swim regularly when you do have the opportunity you can make the outing fun and healthy.
