Testing Catheters for Leaks

Testing for pressure decay in catheters usually uses compressed dry nitrogen or air. Female Luer fittings are connected to the test by using ISO-80369 steel or CTS Connect Luer fitting, which is designed specifically to form a seal over both female and male fittings to Luer. Once the Luer has been installed, you can begin the test.

The catheter is set to the test pressure desired. In the case of balloon catheters that aren't compliant the test pressure is typically between 150-450 psig. For multi-lumen catheters, the pressure of the test is typically between 5 and 200 psig. Give yourself enough time before testing the decay for the pressure to settle.
